Take the Bandage Off, Sis: Healing Beyond the Surface

There comes a point in life where functioning is no longer enough.

You can smile.
You can show up.
You can serve, love, work, and even worship…

…and still be hurting.

The truth is, many of us haven’t healed—we’ve just learned how to cover. We’ve placed emotional and spiritual bandages over wounds caused by disappointment, broken relationships, and even church hurt.

But healing?
Healing requires exposure.

In this powerful episode of It’s Been a Journey, I sat down with Jovie Wilkerson, Evangelist & Psalmist, to talk about her God-given movement, “Take the Bandage Off, Sis.”

1. How Was “Take the Bandage Off, Sis” Birthed?

Every movement has a moment where it becomes an assignment.

Jovie’s Answer:

  • God gave this to me in a place where I had to confront my own pain—not just preach over it
  • I realized many women were functioning, but not healed
  • The “bandage” represents what we use to hide wounds instead of treating them
  • This was not just for others—it started with me taking my own bandage off
  • God showed me that healing requires exposure, not perfection

Why this matters:
What God gives you is often birthed from what you’ve survived.

2. What Are the Phases of Church Hurt?

Church hurt is real—and it doesn’t happen all at once.

Jovie’s Answer:

  • It often starts with offense or disappointment from leadership or members
  • Then comes internalization—where you begin to carry it silently
  • Withdrawal follows—you distance yourself emotionally or physically
  • You may begin to question your trust, your calling, or even God
  • If not addressed, it can lead to spiritual shutdown or isolation

Why this matters:
You can’t heal what you won’t identify.

3. How Do You Release Pain and Let People Go?

Releasing isn’t easy—but it’s necessary.

Jovie’s Answer:

  • Be honest about what hurt you—stop minimizing your pain
  • Stop holding on to people out of history or obligation
  • Set boundaries that protect your peace, even if others don’t understand
  • Give the situation to God instead of trying to control the outcome
  • Understand that letting go is not losing—it’s choosing healing

Why this matters:
Holding on keeps you connected to what hurt you.

4. How Does Pain Lie Dormant—and How Can You Recognize It?

Not all pain is loud—some of it is quiet and hidden.

Jovie’s Answer:

  • Dormant pain shows up in your reactions, not just your memories
  • You may feel “fine” until something triggers a deeper response
  • It can appear as overreacting, shutting down, or avoiding situations
  • You may struggle with trust, even in safe relationships
  • God will often allow situations to surface what you thought was healed

Why this matters:
Just because it’s quiet doesn’t mean it’s gone.

5. What Is Your Message to Both Women and Men?

Healing is not just for women—it’s for everyone.

Jovie’s Answer:

  • Stop covering what God is trying to heal
  • Healing is a process, but it starts with a decision
  • You don’t have to carry what hurt you forever
  • God is not afraid of your truth—He wants to meet you in it
  • Take the bandage off so God can deal with the root, not just the surface

Why this matters:
Unhealed people build broken patterns—in relationships, in ministry, and in life.

Final Thoughts: Healing Requires Courage

Healing is not always loud.
Sometimes it’s choosing truth over comfort.

Sometimes it’s letting go.
Sometimes it’s facing what you tried to forget.

But one thing is certain:
What you cover, God cannot fully heal.
