The Mother’s Wound: Healing When She’s Gone, Absent, or Hurt You

By It Been a Journey Podcast Host: Shenelle Ball-Green

There are wounds no one can see—wounds that don’t leave scars on the skin but etch themselves deep into the soul. For many, one of the deepest cuts comes from the person who was supposed to love us unconditionally: our mother.

Sometimes, the mother wound isn’t caused by mental illness, extreme abuse, or abandonment in the most obvious sense. Sometimes it comes from a mother who was simply unavailable, distracted, or emotionally distant—even while appearing “present” to the outside world.

Whether your mother was physically gone, emotionally absent, or hurt you in ways no one else recognized, the ache is real. And if you’ve ever felt that quiet, unspoken pain, you’re not alone.

What Is the Mother’s Wound?

The mother’s wound is an emotional injury that develops when the nurturing, safety, and love we needed as children wasn’t consistently given. It can leave us feeling:

  • Unworthy of love
  • Afraid to trust
  • Overly independent
  • Starved for affirmation

It’s not always about blame—it’s about understanding where the gap began so healing can take place.

Why This Conversation Matters

Unhealed mother wounds can affect our relationships, self-esteem, parenting styles, and even our faith walk. But here’s the truth: acknowledging the wound isn’t dishonoring your mother—it’s honoring your own healing.

3 Common Sources of the Mother Wound

  1. When She Was Physically Gone – Due to death, career demands, separation, or other circumstances.
  2. When She Was Emotionally Absent – She provided care but no consistent connection, affection, or emotional safety.
  3. When She Caused Emotional Hurt – Through criticism, favoritism, neglect, or prioritizing others over you.

The Good News: You Can Heal

Healing from the mother wound involves honesty, grace, and practical steps toward self-restoration. It means allowing God to fill the spaces where hurt has lived for too long. It means creating boundaries without bitterness and finding peace without pretending the pain never existed.

In my latest episode of It’s Been a Journey, I share personal insights, biblical wisdom, and actionable steps for healing from the mother wound—whether your mom has passed away, was absent due to life’s struggles, or hurt you out of her own brokenness.
